On the authority of the Mother of the Faithful, Umm `Abdillaah `Aaishah (radi Allaahu ‘anhaa) , who said: The Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaau alayhi wa sallam) said:

“He who innovates something in this matter of ours [i.e. Islaam] that is not of it will have it rejected [by Allaah]”. [Related by al-Bukhaari no 2697 and Muslim no 1718].In one version by Muslim it reads: He who does an act which we have not commanded, will have it rejected [by Allaah].

Biography of the narrator:

The noble female companion, the mother of the faithful Ummu Abdil-llah ‘Aa’ishah bintu Aby Bakr As-Siddeeq-Allah is pleased with her and her father and his father-. The prophet peace is upon him married her at the second year of the Hijrah at the age of nine. She was known for possessing a great understanding of the religion, hadeeth and fiqh. The companions used to refer to her in matters of knowledge. She is one of the seven who narrated over a thousand hadeeth from the prophet peace is upon him as she narrated 1210 hadeeths. She died at year 57 of Hijrah.

Benefits taken from this hadeeth:

1-This hadeeth is from the greatest principles of the religion.

2-It is impermissible to innovate in the religion even if it was done with good intention.

3-It is impermissible to copy someone who innovated in the religion.

4-The origin in acts of worship is impermissibility unless what has been authorized with proof.

5-For acts of worship to be accepted-after sincerity- they must conform with the way of the prophet peace is upon him in six things:

1-The reason: it must be a one that is approved by the Sharee’hah. For example if someone prayed the night prayer on the 27 of Rajab or the 15 of Sha’baan. We say to him this act is rejected because Allah did not make these two nights a reason to pray the night prayer.

2-The kind: for example if someone sacrificed a horse on Eidul-Adhaa. We say this is rejected because the kinds of sacrificial animals have been specified and horse is not one of them.

3-The amount: for example if someone made ablution four times on one limb or added a rak’ah to a prayer.

4-The form or the way: for example if someone prostrated in his prayer before he bows. Or if he preformed the ablution the other around starting from his feet. We say this is rejected.

5-The time: for example if someone prayed the Fajr before or after the entry time or if someone fasted Muharram instead of Ramadaan or if someone made Hajj in Thil-Qi’dah.

6-The place: for example if someone made seclusion in a place other than the Masjid.

So any act of worship that does not meet the Sharee’hah in these six things will be rejected.

Statements of the Salaf related to this hadeeth:

1-Imam Maalik rahimahul-llah said: whoever claims that there is a good innovation in Islam he has claimed that Muhammad-peace is upon him- has betrayed in delivering the message because Allah the exalted said:

{This day I have perfected your religion for you} verse 3 in Suratul-Maa’idah. So what was not the religion then will not be the religion today. Al-I’tiSaam by Ash-ShaaTibee 1/49.

2-Abdul-llah bin Umar-Allah is pleased with him- said: every innovation is a misguidance even if people see it good. Thammul-Kalaam by Abdul-llah Al-Ansaaree no or page 276.
